Emergency Vehicle Operations Course for Ambulance Operators

The Driving Company is proud to partner with South Bay Regional Public Safety Consortium to offer Ambulance EVOC.  Training venues are immediately available in Monterey, Salinas, Mountain View, and Hayward California.  Other training locations may be arranged upon request.  The Driving Company instructors love to travel, so no venue is out of the question!

Paramedics and other personnel required to operate an ambulance will get critical information and behind-the-wheel training necessary to operate this type of vehicle.  An ambulance is a unique vehicle, which is carrying a lot of life-saving equipment.  Its weight alone makes it imperative for drivers to understand the vehicle dynamics associated with this type of driving.  Emergency responses (Code 3) require exceptional decision-making skills.  These skills can be taught to new drivers in a controlled environment.  Driving is a perishable skill, meaning that complacency can set in over time.  Periodic refresher training can ensure that drivers are operating at their best.  Ambulances involved in accidents can become a problem for other emergency responders, rather than part of the solution.

Private ambulance companies face the realities of law suits, and high insurance costs like any other type of company.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on-the-job highway crashes cost employers over $16,500 per crash, and over $74,000 per injury, and over $500,000 per fatality.  According to the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety, driver training is a key component in reducing accidents and the resulting costs.  Click here for the full NHTSA article.

These courses are designed by Lead Instructor Dave Storton who holds a Master's degree in Adult Education, and has trained over 5,000 emergency vehicle operators.  The courses are based in the latest in adult learning methods; no slow and torturous death by Power Point!  These are very hands-on, experiential courses. These courses have a low student to instructor ratio.  All emergency response training activities have a 1 to 1 student / instructor ratio.

  • Proper Backing Techniuqes

1-day Ambulance EVOC Update:

This course will provide a review of material for experienced drivers.  Although not as in depth as the new driver course, all of the same material is covered.

2-day Ambulance EVOC for New Drivers:

This is an in-depth course for new drivers with little or no experience operating an emergency vehicle.

4-day Train-the-Trainer Instructor Course:

The 4-day Train-the-Trainer course covers ambulance driving basics as in the 2-day course, aspects of adult learning, techniques of teaching, course facilitation, dealing with problem students, remedial training issues, and safety considerations in EVOC training.  At the end of the course the students will be able to plan and administer a basic Ambulance EVOC course for their company.  We highly recommend all personnel who are going to teach an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course attend this Train-the-Trainer course.  The Trainer-the-Trainer course is not intended to teach students to train other instructors.

The students in the instructor course will receive:

1.  A sample expanded course outline that can be modified to meet your needs and requirements.
2.  A sample lesson plan
3.  Sample safety guidelines that can be modified to meet your needs and requirements.
4.  A PowerPoint presentation that can be used in the classroom component of your own classes.
5.  We will provide ongoing support by acting as a resource for all your instructors as they develop their own courses.
